Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple

The Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple, first built in 1863 by the Teochew immigrants as a house of worship for Hiang Thian Siang Ti (Deity of the North), is located at Carpenter Street in the city centre.

Known as a sacred place of worship for devotees and a historical monument, the majestic temple is a popular tourists attraction for both local and foreign visitors.

Every 4th day of the 12 moons of the lunar calendar, devotees will congregate at the temple to participate in a ritualistic celebration to commemorate the re-furbishment of the statues of the Deities completed in 1968.

The celebration will see the town coming alive with a burst of activities which include a colourful procession as the main highlight. Thousands of people usually line the streets to witness this celebration which will last late into the night. The crowds will be rewarded with a skillful display of talents by the Lion and Dragon dance troupes amidst the thunderous beatings of the gongs and drums while pretty maidens, singers and dancers in colorful costumes performed on beautifully decorated floats.

It was formed some 100-150 million years ago. There are stalactite and stalagmite formations on the floor of the caves that resemble figures and animals. A number of shrines and altars were erected in the cave where local Taoist Chinese make offerings to the peculiar formations. This is perhaps how the name "Fairy" Cave arised.

Regarded as something of an architectural enigma, its design is reminiscent of buildings in the Southern states of America - a mixture of late English renaissance and colonial architecture. It served as a General Hospital until 1947.

Although a relatively modern building (1968), its design is faithful to traditional Islamic architecture. It is set in an ancient Muslim cemetery on the site of an old wooden Mosque. The Mosque and its grounds are open to visitors, but they are asked to dress respectfully and not enter the Mosque during prayer times.
